About
The Aldeburgh Festival, founded by Benjamin Britten in 1948, is one of the most distinguished music festivals in the world. Centred on the stunning Snape Maltings Concert Hall — a Victorian maltings building on the Suffolk marshes converted into one of the finest concert halls in England — the festival presents two weeks of classical music, opera, new commissions, and experimental work. The programming is adventurous — major orchestral works alongside chamber music, world premieres, and cross-genre collaborations. The concert hall's acoustic is superb, and the setting — surrounded by reed beds, marshes, and the Alde estuary — adds something intangible to the experience. Concerts also take place in Aldeburgh's parish church and Orford Church, both atmospheric venues. The Maltings complex has excellent restaurants, shops, and galleries alongside the concert hall. The surrounding landscape is hauntingly beautiful — Britten's music was deeply influenced by this coast, and hearing his works performed here is profoundly moving. Book well in advance for popular concerts. The festival also runs year-round programming outside the main June festival.
