About
The National Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the highest mountains in Scotland (Ben Nevis, 1,345m), England (Scafell Pike, 978m), and Wales (Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa, 1,085m) within 24 hours, including driving time between them. It's one of the UK's most popular endurance challenges — roughly 30,000 people attempt it each year, and it's become the go-to charity fundraising adventure. The standard route starts at Ben Nevis, drives south to Scafell Pike in the Lake District, then on to Snowdon in North Wales. Total walking distance is about 23 miles and 3,000m of ascent. The driving is about 10 hours. Most people start in the late afternoon/evening and aim to summit Snowdon by the following afternoon. You can do it independently (hire a driver so you can rest between mountains) or through commercial operators who provide guides, transport, and logistics. Fitness preparation is essential — three mountain ascents with minimal sleep is demanding. The walks themselves are not technically difficult in good weather, but mountain conditions can change rapidly. Most attempts take place in summer when daylight hours are longest.
