Mousehole
About
Mousehole (pronounced 'Mowzul') is a tiny fishing village with a horseshoe harbour that's often described as the most beautiful village in Cornwall. The harbour is minuscule — a granite breakwater protecting a handful of fishing boats — and the village clusters around it in narrow lanes of granite cottages covered in flowers. Dylan Thomas spent his honeymoon here and called it 'the loveliest village in England'. The village comes alive at Christmas when Tom Bawcock's Eve is celebrated on December 23rd with a stargazy pie (a fish pie with pilchard heads poking through the pastry — it looks alarming but tastes great) and the entire harbour is illuminated with thousands of lights. The Christmas lights are spectacular — a proper community effort that draws visitors from across Cornwall. The rest of the year, Mousehole is quietly charming. A couple of excellent pubs (the Ship Inn does good food with harbour views), a few galleries and gift shops, and the kind of peace that the bigger resorts can't offer. The coast path from Mousehole to Lamorna Cove is a beautiful walk. Go out of season if you can — in August the narrow lanes are congested, but in spring or autumn it's perfect.
