Grantchester Meadows and the River Cam
About
The meadows between Cambridge and Grantchester are some of the most idyllic riverside landscapes in England. The walk follows the Cam south from the Mill Pond, through flat water meadows dotted with wildflowers and grazing cattle, with willows trailing in the river and punts drifting past. It's about 45 minutes each way on foot, or you can cycle it in 15. The swimming spots along the Cam here are legendary — locals have been swimming in the river for centuries, and on hot days the meadows fill with swimmers, picnickers, and sunbathers. The water is clean, the current gentle, and the setting about as perfect as outdoor swimming gets in England. Sheep's Green and the Mill Pond near Newnham are the most accessible spots. Pink Floyd named their second album track after Grantchester Meadows — the pastoral soundscape captures the atmosphere perfectly. In spring and early summer, the wildflower meadows are breathtaking. Combine the walk with tea at the Orchard in Grantchester and you have the perfect Cambridge day out. Bring a towel and a book.
