About

Clive Steps, King Charles Street, London SW1A 2AQ

Beneath the streets of Westminster lies the secret bunker where Winston Churchill and his War Cabinet directed Britain's war effort. The Churchill War Rooms are preserved almost exactly as they were left in 1945 — the map room with its pins still in place, Churchill's bedroom, the telephone room where he spoke directly to the White House, and the cramped quarters where staff worked around the clock. The atmosphere is genuinely haunting. The low ceilings, the strip lighting, the sense of claustrophobia — you can feel the pressure these people were under. The audio guide is one of the best in London, bringing each room to life with recordings and first-hand accounts. The attached Churchill Museum uses interactive displays to chronicle his entire life, from Boer War correspondent to wartime leader. It's one of the most popular museums in London, so booking timed entry tickets in advance is essential. Allow 90 minutes minimum. Combined with a walk through St James's Park to Buckingham Palace, it makes for a brilliant Westminster morning.
