The Dark Hedges
About
The Dark Hedges is an avenue of ancient beech trees planted in the 18th century by the Stuart family to line the approach to their mansion, Gracehill House. The trees have grown together over the centuries to form a stunning natural tunnel — twisted, gnarled branches intertwining overhead to create one of the most photographed and atmospheric tree-lined roads in the world. The avenue became globally famous as the King's Road in Game of Thrones, and the location is now one of Northern Ireland's most visited sites. The trees are best seen early in the morning or late afternoon when the light filters through the canopy and the tourist coaches haven't yet arrived. In autumn, the colours are spectacular. In winter, the bare branches create an almost gothic atmosphere. The road is closed to through traffic, so you can walk freely along the avenue. The trees are protected and there's an ongoing conservation programme. A car park with facilities is nearby. The Dark Hedges are on the Causeway Coastal Route, easily combined with the Giant's Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, and Bushmills Distillery for a spectacular day on the Antrim coast.
