About

Big Pit, Blaenavon, Torfaen NP4 9XP

Big Pit is one of the most authentic and moving museum experiences in Wales. This is a real coal mine — worked from 1860 to 1980 — where former miners take you 90 metres underground in the original cage lift, then guide you through the tunnels with a cap lamp and battery pack on your belt. The underground tour is extraordinary — dark, cold, cramped, and profoundly eye-opening about what mining life was actually like. The surface buildings are preserved as they were when the mine closed — the pithead baths, the blacksmith's forge, the winding engine house, and the mining galleries with exhibitions on the social history of the Welsh coalfields. The stories from the ex-miner guides are what make it — many grew up in mining families and speak about the work with a combination of pride, humour, and sobering honesty. It's completely free, including the underground tour, and it's one of the finest industrial heritage sites in Britain. The mine is near Blaenavon, itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its industrial landscape. Allow 2-3 hours. Not suitable for very young children or anyone with severe claustrophobia. Warm clothing essential underground — it's cold down there regardless of the weather above.
