Eden Project
About
The Eden Project is one of the most ambitious environmental projects in the world — a series of massive geodesic domes (Biomes) housing rainforest and Mediterranean ecosystems, set in a disused clay pit in Cornwall. The Rainforest Biome is the largest indoor rainforest in the world, complete with a canopy walkway, a waterfall, and temperatures that make you understand why the tropics are the tropics. The Mediterranean Biome contains olive groves, grapevines, and fragrant herbs. Beyond the Biomes, the outdoor gardens are extensive and beautifully designed — local and temperate plants, sculpture, and a programme of exhibitions and installations that explore humanity's relationship with the natural world. The education programme is outstanding, and the Eden Sessions (summer concerts in the natural amphitheatre of the pit) have hosted major artists. Eden is a social enterprise as well as a visitor attraction — its work on sustainability, conservation, and education is genuine and substantial. Allow at least 3-4 hours. The zip wire across the pit and the abseil into the Biome are thrilling additions. Book online for discounts. The drive from London is long, but the experience is genuinely world-class.
