Shakespeare's Birthplace
About
Shakespeare's Birthplace on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon is the half-timbered house where William Shakespeare was born in 1564 and grew up. The building has been a place of literary pilgrimage for over 250 years — visitors have included Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, and virtually every major writer in the English language. The house is restored to reflect how it would have appeared in Shakespeare's childhood, with Tudor furnishings and domestic details. Live performances in the garden bring Shakespeare's words to life — actors perform excerpts throughout the day, and the combination of hearing the language in the place where the writer grew up adds a layer of meaning you don't get in a theatre. The exhibition in the modern visitor centre next door is well-curated, exploring Shakespeare's life, works, and enduring influence. Stratford-upon-Avon itself is a charming market town worth exploring: Holy Trinity Church (where Shakespeare is buried), the Royal Shakespeare Theatre (catch a show if you can), and the riverside walks along the Avon are all excellent. The Shakespeare Trust manages five heritage properties in and around Stratford — a combined ticket offers good value if you plan to visit several.
