About
The Turner Prize is the UK's most high-profile contemporary art award — given annually to a British artist under 50 for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work in the previous year. The shortlisted exhibition, which tours to a different city each year, is always one of the most talked-about art events in the country. The prize divides opinion reliably — tabloid outrage about unmade beds and pickled sharks has been part of its story since the 1990s — but the shortlisted shows are consistently thought-provoking, ambitious, and often genuinely moving. Past winners include Damien Hirst, Steve McQueen, Grayson Perry, and Lubaina Himid. The prize has expanded its range significantly in recent years. The shortlisted exhibition is free at Tate galleries or the hosting venue. The winner is announced in a televised ceremony in December. Check the Tate website for the 2026 venue — the prize rotates between Tate Britain and regional galleries. Whether you love or hate the work, the Turner Prize remains the most important conversation about contemporary art in Britain.
