About

Leeman Road, York YO26 4XJ

The National Railway Museum in York is the largest railway museum in the world, and it's not just for train enthusiasts — it's a genuinely brilliant day out for anyone. The collection includes over 100 locomotives and 300 other items of rolling stock, from Stephenson's Rocket to a Japanese bullet train, from royal saloons to the record-breaking Mallard. The Great Hall is a cathedral of engineering — a massive space filled with locomotives displayed on a working turntable. The Station Hall recreates a Victorian station platform with original carriages you can board. The engineering workshops let you watch ongoing restoration work. For children, the interactive galleries and miniature railway are a hit. It's completely free (with the exception of some special exhibitions and simulator rides), which makes it extraordinary value for families. Allow at least 2-3 hours, though dedicated railway fans could spend an entire day. It's a short walk from York station, appropriately enough. The café is decent, and the gift shop is extensive. Even if you've never given trains a second thought, the engineering, design, and social history on display here is fascinating.
