About

Museum Street, York YO1 7FR

Museum Gardens is a beautifully maintained 10-acre park in the centre of York that contains some of the most atmospheric ruins in England. The remains of St Mary's Abbey — once one of the wealthiest Benedictine monasteries in the north — stand as dramatic Gothic arches against the sky. The medieval Hospitium and the 4th-century Multangular Tower (part of the Roman fortress of Eboracum) are also within the gardens. The Yorkshire Museum sits in the grounds and houses an excellent collection of Roman, Viking, and medieval artefacts. But many visitors come simply for the gardens themselves — the riverside walk, the mature trees, and the extraordinary experience of sitting among 800-year-old abbey ruins in the middle of a city. The gardens are free and open daily. In summer, picnickers spread out on the lawns between the ruins. In autumn, the leaf colour against the ancient stonework is beautiful. The ruins of the abbey are particularly atmospheric in the early morning or at dusk. It's one of those places where layers of history are literally visible in the landscape — Roman, medieval, and modern York all in a single view.
