About

6-8 St Helen's Square, York YO1 8QP

Betty's has been serving tea and cakes in York since 1936, and stepping through the door feels like entering a time capsule of elegant Yorkshire hospitality. Founded by a Swiss confectioner called Frederick Belmont who fell in love with Yorkshire, Betty's combines Swiss patisserie skills with English tea room tradition — and the result is an institution that York couldn't imagine without. The St Helen's Square branch is the flagship — a beautiful art deco interior with a pianist playing in the evenings, immaculate table service, and a display counter of cakes and pastries that requires genuine willpower to walk past. The Fat Rascals (a Yorkshire scone-meets-rock-cake hybrid) are the signature item, but the afternoon tea is the full experience — finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream, and a tier of exquisite cakes. There's usually a queue, especially at weekends and during holidays — Betty's doesn't take reservations for fewer than six people. The queue is part of the experience, and it moves reasonably quickly. Come for the craft, stay for the atmosphere. There's a reason Betty's has survived nearly 90 years — some traditions are worth keeping.
