About

48 Stonegate, York YO1 8AS

House of the Trembling Madness is a craft beer and medieval banquet experience hidden above a bottle shop on Stonegate — and it's one of the most wonderfully strange drinking experiences in England. The first-floor bar is set in a 12th-century Norman hall, complete with vaulted ceilings, animal skulls mounted on the walls, antlers, candlelight, and a selection of over 400 bottled beers from around the world. The atmosphere is somewhere between a Viking mead hall and a Gothic fever dream — dark wood, flickering flames, and the kind of décor that suggests the owner has interesting dreams. The beer selection is taken seriously — the staff are knowledgeable and will help you navigate the extraordinary range. The food (sharing boards, pies, cheese platters) matches the medieval-meets-modern vibe. The entrance is easy to miss — it's through the bottle shop at street level, up a narrow staircase. The space is small and popular, so arriving early (especially on weekends) is wise. There's a second, larger venue on Lendal called Trembling Madness at Lendal with more seating. Both are excellent, but the Stonegate original has more character.
