York Minster
About
York Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, and standing inside it for the first time is one of those moments where your brain genuinely struggles to process the scale. The nave stretches 60 metres, the Great East Window contains the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world, and the octagonal Chapter House has some of the finest medieval stone carving you'll see anywhere. The Undercroft Museum beneath the Minster is a revelation — excavations uncovered Roman remains, a Norman cathedral foundation, and Viking artefacts, all displayed in atmospheric underground galleries. The climb to the top of the Central Tower (275 steps, no lift) rewards you with panoramic views across York and the surrounding Vale — on a clear day you can see the North York Moors. Evensong is free and beautiful — the choir performs most evenings during term time, and hearing those voices fill this enormous space is genuinely moving. Allow at least 90 minutes for the Minster, more if you climb the tower. The stonemasons' yard at the back is often open for viewing — the Minster has had a permanent team of masons since the 13th century.
