About

Minster Yard, York YO1 7JL

Treasurer's House is a beautifully maintained National Trust property next to York Minster that tells a fascinating double story. The house itself was built for the treasurers of the Minster from the 11th century onwards, but its current appearance is largely the creation of Frank Green, an eccentric Victorian-Edwardian collector who bought the house in 1897 and filled it with an extraordinary collection of furniture and decorative arts. The rooms are arranged as period interiors, and the collection ranges from medieval to Edwardian — it's a showcase of one man's obsessive, expensive taste. The cellars are famous in paranormal circles — a plumber named Harry Martindale claimed to have seen a troop of Roman soldiers marching through the cellar wall in 1953, which chimes with the fact that a Roman road does run beneath the house at the exact level he described. The gardens are lovely — formal and peaceful, with views of the Minster that few visitors to York ever see. The tearoom is charming. Allow about 90 minutes. It's one of York's lesser-known attractions but one of its most rewarding, especially if you enjoy fine interiors and the stories of the slightly eccentric people who created them.
