Theatre by the Lake
About
Theatre by the Lake in Keswick is one of the most beautifully located theatres in England — a purpose-built 400-seat venue on the shores of Derwentwater, with views from the foyer across the lake to the surrounding fells. The location alone would justify a visit, but the theatre's year-round programme of productions is genuinely excellent — consistently strong casts, ambitious programming, and a reputation that draws audiences from across the north. The main auditorium presents a season of six productions running in repertoire through summer and autumn — typically a mix of classics, modern plays, musicals, and new writing. The smaller Studio theatre programmes more experimental work. The Christmas production is a Keswick institution. The theatre also hosts live cinema screenings, talks, and music events. Pre-show dining in the restaurant overlooking the lake is a lovely way to begin an evening. The Lakeside Walk from Keswick town centre to the theatre (about 10 minutes) is beautiful at dusk. Ticket prices are very reasonable for the quality of production. If you're staying in Keswick or the northern Lakes, an evening at Theatre by the Lake is one of the best things you can do.
