About

Honister Pass, Borrowdale, Keswick, Cumbria CA12 5XN

Honister Slate Mine is the last working slate mine in England — perched at the top of the dramatic Honister Pass between Buttermere and Borrowdale. The mine has been extracting green Lakeland slate from the mountainside since the 1600s, and you can take a guided tour deep into the mountain to see the original workings, learn about the extraordinary lives of the miners, and understand the geology that makes this slate distinctive. The Via Ferrata (iron pathway) climbing experience is the headline attraction for adventure seekers — a series of metal rungs, bridges, and cables fixed to the cliff face that lets you climb the exterior of the mine workings with dramatic exposure above the valley. There are two routes: the Classic (suitable for beginners) and the Xtreme (for experienced climbers). Both offer extraordinary views and a genuine adrenaline rush. The mine sits at 356 metres above sea level, at the top of one of the Lake District's most spectacular mountain passes. The drive to Honister from either direction is stunning. The visitor centre has a café and a shop selling beautiful slate products. Book via ferrata and mine tours in advance — they're popular and group sizes are limited.
