Helvellyn
About
Helvellyn is England's third-highest peak at 950 metres — and the approach via Striding Edge is one of the most thrilling ridge walks in the country. The narrow, exposed arête, with drops on both sides, requires confidence, a head for heights, and decent weather. In good conditions it's exhilarating; in bad conditions it's dangerous. Check the weather forecast and be honest about your experience level. For those who prefer a less exposed route, the path from Thirlmere via Helvellyn Gill is a steady climb without the airy scrambling. The summit itself is a broad plateau with views across the entire Lake District — on a clear day you can see Scotland, the Isle of Man, and the Pennines. Red Tarn, the corrie lake below the summit, is beautiful from above. The classic circuit from Glenridding takes in Striding Edge on the ascent and Swirral Edge on the descent (or vice versa) — allow 5-7 hours. Proper walking boots, waterproofs, map and compass (don't rely solely on your phone), and enough food and water are essential. The mountain has claimed lives — respect it. But in good conditions, Striding Edge is one of the great mountain experiences in England.
