About

Grasmere, Ambleside, Cumbria LA22 9SH

Grasmere is the village that Wordsworth called 'the loveliest spot that man hath ever found' — and while the Lake District has a lot of competition for that title, Grasmere makes a strong case. A small, stone-built village nestled in a valley between fells, with a lake, a river, and a churchyard where Wordsworth is buried, it has an atmosphere of timeless, contained beauty. Dove Cottage, on the outskirts of the village, was Wordsworth's home from 1799 to 1808 and is now a museum — the small rooms and the garden that inspired some of the greatest poetry in the English language are faithfully preserved. The adjacent Wordsworth Museum has manuscripts, letters, and personal items. The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop, in the old schoolhouse, sells Sarah Nelson's original gingerbread recipe from 1854 — it's unique, delicious, and unlike any gingerbread you've had. The walk around Grasmere Lake (about 4 miles, mostly flat) is one of the gentlest and most beautiful in the Lake District. For something more strenuous, Helm Crag ('The Lion and the Lamb') is a steep but short fell walk with one of the best summit views in the area. The village has excellent independent restaurants and cafés — Grasmere has become genuinely foodie in recent years.
