About

Ambleside, Cumbria LA22 9BU

Ambleside is the walkers' capital of the Lake District — a small, bustling town at the head of Windermere that serves as the natural base camp for exploring the central fells. The town is packed with outdoor shops, gear stores, pubs serving fell-walkers' portions, and independent restaurants that have elevated beyond standard Lakeland fare. The town itself has genuine character: the Bridge House (a tiny stone building perched over Stock Ghyll) is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lakes. Stock Ghyll Force, a 70-foot waterfall, is a 15-minute walk from the centre. The walk along the lakeshore to Waterhead is flat and beautiful, with views across Windermere to the Langdale Pikes. Ambleside is the starting point for some classic Lake District walks: the Fairfield Horseshoe, Loughrigg Fell (a perfect short walk with incredible views), and the walk over to Grasmere via Rydal. The food scene has improved enormously — Fellpack does outstanding hot dogs and cocktails, Doi Intanon serves excellent Thai, and the old-school pubs still serve proper Cumberland sausage. It's less chocolate-boxy than some Lake District villages, but more useful and more real.
