About

Hawkshead, Ambleside, Cumbria LA22 0NT

Hawkshead is one of the most perfectly preserved medieval villages in the Lake District — a cluster of whitewashed cottages, cobbled squares, and narrow lanes between Windermere and Coniston that has barely changed since Wordsworth went to school here in the 1780s. His grammar school (now a small museum) still stands in the village centre, with his name carved into one of the desks. The village is car-free in the centre, which gives it a tranquillity that's increasingly rare in popular Lake District spots. Independent shops, traditional pubs, and tearooms line the squares. The King's Arms does an excellent pint and proper Cumbrian food. The Beatrix Potter Gallery (run by the National Trust) displays her original illustrations and watercolours. Hawkshead is a perfect base for exploring the quieter western side of the Lakes — Tarn Hows (one of the most beautiful short walks in the region) is nearby, as is Hill Top (Potter's farmhouse). The walk from Hawkshead to Tarn Hows takes about 45 minutes and is stunning. The village gets busy in summer but retains its charm. Come for a cream tea and a wander through Wordsworth's playground.
