About

Bowness-on-Windermere, Cumbria LA23 3HQ

Windermere is England's largest natural lake — 10.5 miles of water stretching through the heart of the Lake District, flanked by wooded hills and fells that change character with every shift in weather and light. It's the gateway to the Lakes for most visitors, and for good reason: boat trips, lakeside walks, watersports, and views that have inspired poets and painters for centuries. Windermere Lake Cruises operates year-round services between Ambleside, Bowness, and Lakeside — the 'yellow cruise' is a good introduction, giving you the full length of the lake in about 90 minutes. Bowness-on-Windermere is the main tourist hub with shops, restaurants, and the Windermere Jetty Museum (a superb collection of historic boats). The western shore is quieter and more atmospheric — the road from Hawkshead through Claife Heights gives stunning elevated lake views. For activities, you can hire kayaks, paddleboards, rowing boats, and sailing dinghies from several operators. The lakeshore walks (particularly the west shore from the ferry terminal to Wray Castle) are beautiful. Wild swimming is popular at quieter beaches, especially Millerground and Low Wray. Arrive early in summer — the car parks fill fast, especially at Bowness.
