The York Dungeon
About
The York Dungeon is a live-action horror attraction that takes you through 2,000 years of York's darkest history — plague, torture, Viking invasion, the Gunpowder Plot, and Dick Turpin's final ride. It's performed by actors in themed sets, with special effects, jump scares, and audience participation that ranges from mildly embarrassing to genuinely startling. The actors are the highlight — they're committed, funny, and good at reading the crowd. The shows are broadly historically based (with creative liberties) and manage to be both entertaining and mildly educational. The plague section and the courtroom scene are particularly well done. The whole experience lasts about 75 minutes. It's obviously aimed primarily at families and teenagers, but adults without children can enjoy it too — especially if you lean into the theatrical silliness. Not suitable for very young children (some scenes are genuinely scary for under-8s). Book online for cheaper tickets. It's on Clifford Street, right in the centre. A fun, silly counterpoint to York's more serious historical attractions.
