About

Fossgate, York YO1 9TF

Fossgate is York's most interesting food and drink street — a gentle slope of independent restaurants, cafés, bars, and shops that has quietly become one of the best eating streets in the north of England. What was once a slightly overlooked medieval lane has blossomed into a destination in its own right, with a concentration of quality that rivals anywhere in the city. Standouts include The Fossgate Social (cocktails and sharing plates), Ambiente Tapas (outstanding Spanish food), Partisan (speciality coffee), and Brew York brewery and taproom (right at the bottom where Fossgate meets the river). The street has a relaxed, slightly bohemian character that distinguishes it from the more touristy Shambles or Stonegate. The architecture is worth noting too — the street follows the line of a medieval route from the city centre to the River Foss, and the buildings are a mix of medieval, Georgian, and Victorian. It's a five-minute walk from the Shambles but feels like a different world — more local, less performative, and increasingly where York's food-conscious residents choose to eat and drink.
