About

18 Folgate Street, Spitalfields, London E1 6BX

Dennis Severs' House on Folgate Street in Spitalfields is one of the most unusual and atmospheric experiences in London. The American artist Dennis Severs created what he called a 'still-life drama' — ten rooms arranged as if a family of Huguenot silk weavers have just stepped out, leaving behind half-eaten meals, rumpled beds, flickering candles, and the smell of food and fire. You walk through in silence, absorbing each room as a sensory painting. The Monday evening candlelit sessions are the definitive way to experience it — moving through the darkened house by candlelight, with no electric light and no talking, is genuinely haunting and beautiful. It's more art installation than museum, and some visitors find it profoundly moving. David Hockney called it 'one of the world's greatest works of opera.' Book well in advance — the candlelit sessions sell out weeks ahead and only accommodate small groups. The daytime 'Silent Night' visits are slightly easier to get into and still wonderful, though they lack the full drama of candlelight. Not suitable for young children. Photography isn't permitted inside.
