About

Walton Street, Jericho, Oxford OX2 6AE

Jericho is Oxford's most characterful neighbourhood — a grid of Victorian terraced streets just north of the city centre that's evolved from a working-class canal-side community into Oxford's bohemian quarter. Walton Street is the main strip, lined with independent bookshops, cafés, restaurants, and pubs. The Phoenix Picturehouse is a beloved arthouse cinema. The area has a strong community feel — neighbours know each other, the independent shops have loyal followings, and there's a farmers' market on the first Thursday of the month. Jericho Café does excellent breakfasts. The Old Bookbinders is a French restaurant in a converted pub that's been an Oxford favourite for decades. The Jericho Tavern is where Radiohead (then called On a Friday) played their first gigs. Jericho borders the Oxford Canal — the towpath is a lovely walk south into the centre or north towards Wolvercote and Port Meadow. The area feels distinctly different from the colleges and tourist centre, and that's exactly its appeal. This is where Oxford lives, rather than where it performs.
