Port Meadow
About
Port Meadow is an ancient common on the western edge of Oxford that's been open grazing land for over a thousand years — it's recorded in the Domesday Book and has never been ploughed. Horses and cattle wander freely across the vast, flat expanse, and in winter it floods to create a temporary lake that attracts thousands of wildfowl. The walk across Port Meadow from Jericho to The Perch or The Trout pub is a classic Oxford excursion. Both pubs are gorgeous — The Trout sits right on the river at Wolvercote with a peacock-filled garden, and The Perch is a thatched riverside pub reached through the meadow. In summer, swimming in the Thames at Port Meadow is an Oxford tradition (the water is shallow and slow-moving here). Access from Walton Well Road in Jericho or from Wolvercote at the north end. The sunsets across the meadow are spectacular — the flat landscape and huge skies feel almost East Anglian. It's a remarkable piece of ancient landscape surviving right on the edge of the city.
