About
Summerhall is Edinburgh's most exciting multi-arts venue, housed in the former Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies. The building is a labyrinthine complex of old lecture theatres, dissection rooms, corridors, and courtyard spaces that have been transformed into galleries, performance spaces, a microbrewery, a gin distillery, and artist studios. The atmosphere is somewhere between an arts centre and a creative squat. During the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August, Summerhall becomes one of the most important venues on the circuit — consistently programming the kind of experimental theatre, performance art, and spoken word that wins awards and starts careers. Year-round, the galleries host contemporary art exhibitions, and the events programme includes live music, film screenings, and talks. The Royal Dick bar in the old veterinary pub is brilliant — craft beer, good cocktails, and a courtyard that's one of the best outdoor drinking spots in Edinburgh when the sun appears. The Pickering's Gin Distillery on-site offers tours and tastings. It's the kind of place where you go for one thing and discover three others you didn't know about.
