Camera Obscura & World of Illusions
About
Camera Obscura has been bending minds at the top of the Royal Mile since 1853, making it Edinburgh's longest-running visitor attraction. The original Camera Obscura itself — a Victorian rooftop device that projects a live, moving image of Edinburgh onto a white table in a darkened room — is still magical, especially when the guide uses it to 'pick up' tourists from the street below. The five floors of illusions, holograms, optical tricks, and interactive exhibits below the rooftop have been brilliantly updated for the 21st century. Kids go absolutely wild for the Vortex Tunnel, the mirror maze, and the rooms that play tricks with perspective and gravity. Adults enjoy them just as much but try to look more dignified about it. The rooftop terrace offers some of the best views in Edinburgh — you can see the castle from one side and down the Royal Mile from the other. It's busy in summer, but the interactive nature of the exhibits means queues keep moving. Allow about 90 minutes. Genuinely fun for all ages, and much better than you might expect from the outside.
