The Scotch Whisky Experience
About
Perched at the top of the Royal Mile next to Edinburgh Castle, the Scotch Whisky Experience offers one of the best introductions to Scotland's national drink. The tour takes you through the whisky-making process in an entertaining way (including a barrel ride through a simulated distillery — charmingly old-school), but the real highlight is the tutored tasting where you learn to nose and identify the different whisky regions. The collection room houses the Claive Vidiz Collection — nearly 3,400 bottles of Scotch whisky, believed to be the largest collection in the world. The room is dimly lit and the bottles glow behind glass — it's genuinely impressive, even if whisky isn't your thing. The shop has an excellent range, and the staff can recommend bottles at every price point. The Silver Tour is the most popular (one tasting), but the Gold Tour (four tastings across regions) is significantly better value if you're genuinely interested in learning to taste whisky. Morning tours are quieter. It's touristy, yes, but it's also genuinely educational and well done — a good first stop before visiting actual distilleries around Scotland.
