Mill Road
About
Mill Road is Cambridge's most diverse and interesting high street — a long strip running east from the station through the Romsey and Petersfield neighbourhoods, packed with independent shops, international restaurants, and proper local pubs. This is where Cambridge stops being a postcard and starts being a real, multicultural city. The food is exceptional and global — Ethiopian, Turkish, Korean, Cambodian, Indian, and Polish within a few hundred metres of each other. Al Amin does outstanding Middle Eastern food. Hot Numbers is one of the best independent coffee roasters in the country. The vintage and charity shops are excellent for browsing. The Cambridge Blue pub has one of the best beer gardens in the city. The Mill Road Winter Fair in early December closes the whole road to traffic and fills it with food stalls, live music, arts, and thousands of people. It's the best free community event in Cambridge. Year-round, Mill Road has the kind of energy and diversity that the city centre, with its college tourists and chain shops, lacks entirely. This is real Cambridge.
