Pulteney Bridge & Weir
About
Pulteney Bridge is one of only four bridges in the world to have shops built across its full span on both sides — a Palladian beauty designed by Robert Adam in 1774 that spans the River Avon in three graceful arches. From the bridge itself (it looks like an ordinary street of shops unless you know), you'd never guess you were on a bridge at all. The best views are from below — walk down to Parade Gardens or the towpath on the north bank to see the bridge alongside the elegant horseshoe weir that creates a cascading waterfall beneath it. This view — bridge, weir, and Georgian buildings — is one of the most photographed in England, and it's genuinely stunning in every light and season. The shops on the bridge include galleries, gift shops, and a florist. The Grand Parade viewing point above gives a different perspective. For the ultimate experience, take a boat trip from below the weir (Pulteney Cruisers run short trips) or walk along the towpath east towards Bathampton — a lovely flat riverside walk. Early morning light on the weir is particularly beautiful, and the crowds are thinnest.
Opening Times
