The Piece Hall, Halifax HX1 1RE

The Piece Hall in Halifax is one of the most extraordinary buildings in England — a vast, colonnaded Georgian marketplace built in 1779 as a trading hall for 'pieces' of handwoven cloth. After a £19m restoration in 2017, this Grade I-listed monument has been reborn as a stunning public square surrounded by independent shops, restaurants, galleries, and event spaces. There's nothing quite like it anywhere else in Britain. The building is arranged around a massive open courtyard — imagine a Yorkshire Piazza San Marco, with 315 rooms on three colonnaded levels surrounding an open square that holds 10,000 people for events. The independent shops and businesses are carefully curated: craft workshops, bookshops, artisan food producers, a gin distillery, and some excellent restaurants. The events programme is ambitious — live music concerts, markets, cultural festivals, and community events fill the courtyard throughout the year. The building's transformation has been credited with helping to regenerate Halifax as a whole. Free to enter, free to wander, and a powerful reminder that the north of England built extraordinary things long before London noticed.
