About

Victoria Road, Saltaire, Shipley BD18 3LA

Saltaire is a UNESCO World Heritage Site just north of Leeds — a complete Victorian model village built by the textile magnate Sir Titus Salt in the 1850s for his mill workers. The village is beautifully preserved — uniform honey-coloured stone terraces, a school, a hospital, almshouses, a park, and the enormous Salt's Mill at its heart, all laid out on a grid plan beside the River Aire and the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. Salt's Mill, the vast former textile mill, is now home to the largest collection of David Hockney's work in the world — the 1853 Gallery is a permanent display of his paintings, drawings, and prints in a magnificent industrial space. The mill also has independent shops, a bookshop, a café, and other galleries. It's a remarkable combination of industrial heritage and contemporary art. The village is fascinating to walk around — Salt provided his workers with housing, education, and recreation that was revolutionary for the time, though he banned pubs (he was a teetotaller — the workers had to go to nearby Shipley for a drink, which they still do). Roberts Park across the river is lovely. The canal towpath makes for a pleasant walk. Saltaire is about 15 minutes by train from Leeds.
