About

Castle Street, Cambridge CB3 0AQ

Kettle's Yard is one of the most extraordinary art spaces in Britain. Jim Ede, a former Tate curator, arranged his personal collection of 20th-century art alongside furniture, ceramics, glass, and natural objects in four small cottages, creating a space where art and domestic life are completely integrated. The house is preserved exactly as he left it — works by Ben Nicholson, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, and Alfred Wallis sit on tables and windowsills alongside pebbles, shells, and flowers. The adjoining gallery hosts excellent temporary exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. The whole place has a serenity and intimacy that's unique — it's nothing like a conventional gallery. The spiral staircase, the light, the careful positioning of every object — Ede intended the house to be experienced as a single work of art, and it succeeds. The house visits are free but timed and limited to small groups — book ahead, especially at weekends. The gallery is walk-in. It's on Castle Street, a short walk from the centre. If you visit one thing in Cambridge that isn't a college, make it Kettle's Yard.
