About

Holywell Street, Oxford OX1 3BN

New College (founded in 1379, so not particularly new) is one of Oxford's most beautiful colleges and less overrun than Christ Church. The chapel has a stunning El Greco painting of St James and spectacular medieval misericords. The cloister is one of the finest in Oxford — a tranquil medieval space that was used as a filming location for Harry Potter. The gardens, including the ancient city wall that forms one boundary, are gorgeous. The college's formal garden is exceptional — a grand lawn surrounded by herbaceous borders, with a prominent modern sculpture and the medieval city wall providing a dramatic backdrop. The mound in the garden was a Civil War gun emplacement. In summer, the gardens are immaculate and peaceful. Visitor access varies by term dates and time of day — check the college website before visiting. The chapel choir is outstanding if you can catch Evensong. New College Lane, the street outside, has the Bridge of Sighs at one end (actually Hertford Bridge) and is one of the most photographed streets in Oxford. A quieter, more intimate alternative to the big-ticket colleges.
