About

Market Street, Oxford OX1 3DZ

The Covered Market has been the heart of Oxford's food shopping since 1774, and it's still going strong. Under its Victorian iron-and-glass roof you'll find independent butchers, fishmongers, cheesemongers, bakers, florists, and some properly good food stalls. It's not a tourist market — this is where Oxonians actually shop, which is exactly what makes it worth visiting. Ben's Cookies started here in 1984 and the queue still stretches out the door. The Cake Shop does outstanding pastries. Alpha Bar serves proper Middle Eastern food. The butchers and delis are excellent — if you're self-catering or picnicking, this is where you stock up. There are also independent clothes shops, a cobbler, and gift shops dotted between the food stalls. It's right in the centre of town, between the High Street and Market Street, with multiple entrances. Go mid-morning for the best atmosphere when the stallholders are in full flow. It's compact enough to wander through in 20 minutes, but you'll probably spend longer once you start browsing and eating.
