parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5km run that takes place every Saturday morning in parks across the UK (and worldwide). It's not a race — it's a community event that welcomes runners, joggers, and walkers of all abilities. Over 2 million people are registered in the UK, and over 700 events take place every Saturday morning. The format is simple: register online (once, free), print your barcode, turn up at 9am, and walk, jog, or run 5km. Your time is recorded and you can track your progress week by week. There's no pressure, no entry fee, and no minimum pace. Volunteers (who also get recorded participation) make it happen. parkrun has become one of the most significant community health initiatives in the UK. The social aspect — coffee afterwards, getting to know your local runners, the inclusive atmosphere — is as important as the exercise. Many people credit parkrun with transforming their physical and mental health. It's genuinely one of the best free things in the UK, every single Saturday.
