Kew Gardens
About
Kew Gardens is 300 acres of the most extraordinary botanical collection on earth — over 50,000 living plants, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the most important scientific research institutions in the world. But forget the credentials for a moment: it's also just a staggeringly beautiful place to spend a day. The Palm House is a Victorian glasshouse that recreates a tropical rainforest, steaming with humidity and towering palms. The Temperate House, recently restored, is the largest surviving Victorian glass structure in the world. The Treetop Walkway takes you 18 metres up into the canopy. And the newest addition, the Hive, is an immersive installation that translates real-time honeybee activity into sound and light. Kew is enormous — you genuinely need a full day to do it justice, and even then you'll miss things. Spring is spectacular for the bluebell wood and cherry blossoms. The Christmas illuminations trail in winter (book early, it sells out) is magical. Bring a picnic and find a quiet lawn — this is one of those places where doing nothing feels like doing everything.
