About
The Grand National at Aintree is the most famous horse race in the world — a four-mile steeplechase with 30 fences that captures the nation's attention every April. An estimated 500 million people watch worldwide, and the office sweepstake is a British institution. The course is uniquely challenging, with famous fences like Becher's Brook, The Chair, and Canal Turn. The three-day festival builds to the National on Saturday — the undercard racing is excellent, and the atmosphere at Aintree is festive and accessible in a way that Ascot and Cheltenham sometimes aren't. Ladies Day on Friday is the fashion event. The National itself is run at 17:15 on Saturday, and the roar as the field jumps the first fence is spine-tingling. General admission tickets are available and reasonably priced for a major sporting event. The course is well set up for spectating — you can walk between fences and find your own spot. Aintree is on the outskirts of Liverpool, easily reached by train. Whether you're a racing fan or a once-a-year punt merchant, the atmosphere on National day is electric.
