St George's Hall
About
St George's Hall is one of the finest neoclassical buildings in the world — a Grade I-listed masterpiece on Lime Street that combines a concert hall and law courts in a single monumental structure. Built between 1841 and 1854, the building is faced with Darley Dale sandstone and its scale is genuinely awe-inspiring: the Great Hall, with its elaborate vaulted ceiling and the Minton tile floor (the largest in Europe), is one of the most spectacular interiors in England. The Minton floor is usually covered to protect it, but it's revealed on special Heritage Open Days — the geometric pattern of 30,000 encaustic tiles is dazzling. Regular guided tours take you through the judge's chambers, the cells (some with graffiti scratched by prisoners), and the concert room with its remarkable Willis organ. St George's Hall hosts regular events — concerts, exhibitions, food markets, and cultural festivals. The plateau in front of the building is Liverpool's natural gathering place for celebrations, protests, and memorials. The views from the front steps across to the Walker Art Gallery and World Museum frame one of the finest architectural vistas in Britain.
