About

School Lane, Liverpool L1 3BX

The Bluecoat is Liverpool's oldest city centre building (built 1717 as a charity school) and its most important centre for contemporary art. The beautiful Queen Anne building, arranged around a cobbled courtyard, has been an arts centre since 1927 and hosts a year-round programme of exhibitions, performances, workshops, and events that champion experimental and challenging work. The gallery spaces are intimate and atmospheric — whitewashed rooms in a 300-year-old building give contemporary art a distinctive context. The Bluecoat's programme consistently takes risks, showing emerging artists alongside established names, and the curatorial approach is thoughtful and political without being preachy. The courtyard is one of the loveliest spaces in Liverpool — a quiet enclosure in the middle of the busy city centre where you can sit with a coffee and forget about the shops on either side. The café is good, the gift shop sells work by local artists and makers, and there are artist studios in the upper floors. It's a cultural anchor that's been nurturing Liverpool's creative community for nearly a century.
