About

Mariners Road, Crosby Beach, Liverpool L23 6SX

Another Place is Antony Gormley's extraordinary permanent installation on Crosby Beach — 100 cast-iron figures, each a mould of Gormley's own body, spread across three kilometres of foreshore and reaching almost a kilometre out to sea. At low tide the figures stand exposed on the sand; as the tide rises, the sea gradually claims them until only the furthest heads are visible above the water. The effect is haunting and beautiful — the figures face the horizon in silent contemplation, their surfaces gradually being colonised by barnacles and seaweed, blurring the line between human and natural. The installation was originally temporary (2005) but was made permanent after a campaign by local people who had fallen in love with the silent iron watchers. Visit at different tide states for different experiences. Low tide lets you walk among the figures on the sand; high tide reduces them to distant heads emerging from the waves. Sunset is particularly spectacular — the figures silhouetted against the sky. The beach is about 30 minutes from Liverpool city centre by train (Blundellsands & Crosby station). Dress for wind — the Mersey coast doesn't mess about.
