The Edinburgh International Film Festival is one of the oldest film festivals in the world — established in 1947, the same year as the Edinburgh International Festival and the Fringe. The festival screens around 100 features alongside shorts, documentaries, and retrospectives across venues in Edinburgh, with a programme that balances world premieres with archive discoveries. The EIFF has a strong reputation for championing new talent — many significant directors had early screenings here. The programme runs across the Filmhouse and other city-centre venues. Post-screening Q&As with filmmakers are a regular feature. The festival atmosphere is enhanced by Edinburgh in August, when the city is already buzzing with the Fringe, International Festival, and Book Festival.
