Traverse Theatre
About
The Traverse is Scotland's new writing theatre and one of the most important theatres in Britain for new playwriting. Since 1963 it has championed new voices and premiered work by writers who went on to define contemporary Scottish and British theatre — David Greig, David Harrower, Gregory Burke, and many more. The building houses two flexible studio spaces — the intimacy is the thing. You're close enough to see the sweat on an actor's forehead, and the programming consistently takes risks that bigger theatres won't. During the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August, the Traverse programme is widely regarded as the best-curated selection of new work on the entire Fringe. The Traverse Bar Café is one of the best theatre bars in Edinburgh — a genuine gathering place for Edinburgh's arts community, especially during the Festival. Prices are reasonable, and the pre-show menu is decent. If you see one piece of theatre during your Edinburgh visit, make it something at the Traverse.
