About

Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Snowdonia National Park, Gwynedd LL55 4TY

Yr Wyddfa — Snowdon in English — is the highest mountain in Wales and England at 1,085 metres, and climbing it is one of the great outdoor experiences in Britain. The summit views on a clear day are extraordinary: the mountains of Snowdonia spread in every direction, the Menai Strait and Anglesey to the north, and on exceptional days Ireland, the Lake District, and Scotland are all visible. There are six main routes to the summit, ranging from the relatively gentle Llanberis Path (about 3 hours up, following the railway line) to the challenging Crib Goch ridge — a narrow, knife-edge scramble that's one of the most exposed routes on any mountain in the UK (experienced scramblers only, never in bad weather). The Miners' Track and Pyg Track from Pen-y-Pass are the most popular middle-ground options. The Snowdon Mountain Railway runs from Llanberis to the summit (March to October, weather permitting) for those who prefer wheels to boots. The summit café (Hafod Eryri) is the highest building in Wales. Check the weather forecast before setting out — conditions change rapidly. Proper boots, waterproofs, map and compass are essential on all routes. Welsh speakers will appreciate that Yr Wyddfa officially reclaimed its Welsh name in 2022.
