About

Llanberis, Caernarfon, Gwynedd LL55 4TY

Llanberis is the gateway to Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) and the most popular starting point for walking or taking the rack railway to the summit of Wales's highest mountain. The Snowdon Mountain Railway has been running since 1896 — a steam and diesel rack railway climbing 3,140 feet to the summit, with views that on a clear day stretch to Ireland, the Isle of Man, and the Lake District. The town itself sits between two lakes — Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris — in the shadow of the vast Dinorwig slate quarries. The National Slate Museum in the old quarry workshops is free and fascinating — the waterwheel, the foundry, and the splitting demonstrations bring the industrial history to life. Electric Mountain offers tours inside the massive Dinorwig pumped-storage power station hidden inside the mountain — genuinely extraordinary. Llanberis has a strong outdoor culture — climbing shops, cafés full of muddy walkers, and Pete's Eats, which has been fuelling hikers with enormous portions for decades. The Llanberis Path is the easiest route up Snowdon (about 5-6 hours return), but even if you're not walking, the railway and the slate museum make a brilliant day out. Book the railway well in advance in summer — it's extremely popular.
