About

Mosley Street, Manchester M2 3JL

Manchester Art Gallery is a stately neoclassical building on Mosley Street that houses one of the finest public art collections outside London — and it's completely free. The collection spans six centuries: Pre-Raphaelite paintings (Manchester has one of the best collections in the world), Dutch Masters, Impressionists, and a growing contemporary programme. The Pre-Raphaelite rooms are the standout — Ford Madox Brown's 'Work', Holman Hunt's 'The Hireling Shepherd', and Dante Gabriel Rossetti's 'Astarte Syriaca' are all here. The gallery's recent contemporary acquisitions and displays have been smart and sometimes provocative, engaging with questions of empire, identity, and the role of museums themselves. The gallery café is pleasant, and the craft and design galleries on the upper floors (decorative arts, fashion, furniture) are often quieter and full of surprises. Allow 90 minutes for a good visit. It's right in the city centre, making it easy to combine with shopping, eating, or a walk through the Northern Quarter.
