The Barras
About
The Barras is Glasgow at its most authentically Glaswegian — a sprawling weekend market in the East End that's been going since the 1920s. The covered market halls and surrounding streets are packed with stalls selling everything from vintage records and second-hand books to household goods, antiques, and whatever else folk have decided to flog that weekend. It's chaotic, loud, and brilliant. The real magic of the Barras is the atmosphere. The patter from the stallholders alone is worth the visit — proper Glasgow wit delivered at machine-gun speed. The surrounding streets have some cracking street art, and the Barras Art and Design Centre (BAaD) has turned part of the old market into a creative hub with studios, events, and a great courtyard bar. Go on a Saturday morning for the full experience. Grab a roll and sausage from one of the vans, have a rummage through the stalls, then head to BAaD or one of the East End's growing number of cafés. It's gentrifying around the edges, but the heart of the Barras is still wonderfully rough and ready.
Opening Times
Sat-Sun 10:00-16:00. Some stalls open earlier.
